Anger kills

November 24, 2009

THE Malaysian adage “Jangan marah, nanti cepat tua” might not carry much weight for men, especially in the work environment.

This is if the findings of a Swedish study are to be believed.

The study says men who bottle up their anger at being unfairly treated at work are up to five times more likely to suffer a heart attack, or even die from one, than those who let their frustration show.

“It is not good just to walk away after having such a conflict or to swallow one’s feelings,” said a psychologist at the institute.

But venting one’s anger outside of the workplace didn’t seem to take a cardiovascular toll, at least. “Getting into a bad temper at home” was not associated with an increased risk of heart attack or cardiac death, the study found.

The true for men might not be true for female workers. While the study included more than 2,000 women, too few of them had heart attacks or died of heart disease to allow conclusions to be drawn.

Earlier studies have indicated that women use different coping strategies than men. So for women, strategies such as going away and not saying anything might not be good.

Women in general appear to handle stressful situations better than men.

Social interaction, having people to talk to, is extremely important. If you keep things to yourself, you have high levels of stress hormones. Women are more comfortable in social interactions than men. They talk more, while men tend to keep within themselves.

A study, conducted by the Swedish researchers in 2005, found that women did not have the same levels of cardiovascular risk factors as men.

There is no one key to handling on-the-job stress, because the level of stress depends on an individual’s environment, at work and in the home.

Work environment is important. You need interaction between people so that everybody feels they can express their opinions about their work. You shouldn’t come to work with a feeling that no one cares.

And when you go home, it is very important to share your feelings with whomever you are sharing with. Also, you should understand that children learn from the behaviour of parents. You can have a meaningful effect on the long-term health of children by being good role models. The message is that the environment you culture can affect not only your health but also the health of those who are important to you.

What is cancer?

November 20, 2009

Begins in cells, the building blocks that make up tissues. Tissues make up the organs of the body.

Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old, thWhat is cancer?ey die, and new cells take their place.

Sometimes this orderly process goes wrong. New cells form when the body does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor.

What are benign and malignant brain tumors?

Brain tumors can be benign or malignant:

* Benign brain tumors do not contain cancer cells:

o Usually, benign tumors can be removed, and they seldom grow back.

o The border or edge of a benign brain tumor can be clearly seen. Cells from benign tumors do not invade tissues around them or spread to other parts of the body. However, benign tumors can press on sensitive areas of the brain and cause serious health problems.

o Unlike benign tumors in most other parts of the body, benign brain tumors are sometimes life threatening.

o Very rarely, a benign brain tumor may become malignant.

* Malignant brain tumors contain cancer cells:

o Malignant brain tumors are generally more serious and often are life threatening.

o They are likely to grow rapidly and crowd or invade the surrounding healthy brain tissue.

o Very rarely, cancer cells may break away from a malignant brain tumor and spread to other parts of the brain, to the spinal cord, or even to other parts of the body. The spread of cancer is called metastasis.

o Sometimes, a malignant tumor does not extend into healthy tissue. The tumor may be contained within a layer of tissue. Or the bones of the skull or another structure in the head may confine it. This kind of tumor is called encapsulated.

Tumor Grade

Doctors sometimes group brain tumors by grade – from low grade (grade I) to high grade (grade IV). The grade of a tumor refers to the way the cells look under a microscope. Cells from high-grade tumors look more abnormal and generally grow faster than cells from low-grade tumors

Curry kills cancer cells

Curry kills cancer cells

Curcumin, which is found in tumeric,

can kill cancer cells within 24 hours.

A molecule found in a curry ingredient can kill esophageal cancer cells in the laboratory, suggesting it might be developed as an anti-cancer treatment.

Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Center in Ireland treated esophageal cancer cells with curcumin — a chemical found in the spice turmeric, which gives curries a distinctive yellow color — and found it started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours.

The cells also began to digest themselves, they said in a study published in the British Journal of Cancer.

Previous scientific studies have suggested curcumin can suppress tumors and that people who eat lots of curry may be less prone to the disease, although curcumin loses its anti-cancer attributes quickly when ingested.

Cancers of the esophagus kill more than 500,000 people across the world each year. The tumors are especially deadly, with five-year survival rates of just 12 to 31 percent.

Study showed curcumin caused the cancer cells to die “using an unexpected system of cell messages.

Normally, faulty cells die by committing programed suicide, or apoptosis, which occurs when proteins called caspases are ‘switched on’ in cells.

But these cells showed no evidence of suicide, and the addition of a molecule that inhibits caspases and stops this “switch being flicked’ made no difference to the number of cells that died, suggesting curcumin attacked the cancer cells using an alternative cell signaling system.

U.S. Researchers said in 2007 they had found curcumin may help stimulate immune system cells in the Alzheimer’s disease.

So eat more curry.

Health Food in brief

garlicGarlic

Several large studies have found that those who eat more garlic are less likely to develop various kinds of cancer, especially in digestive organs such as the esophagus, stomach, and colon. Ingredients in the pungent bulbs may keep cancer-causing substances in your body from working, or they may keep cancer cells from multiplying. Experts don’t know how much you need to eat to prevent cancer, but a clove a day may be helpful.

 Berries

berries

As a tasty treat, berries are hard to beat. But their juicy goodness also may make them one of the foods to fight cancer. Berries contain particularly powerful antioxidants, meaning they can halt a naturally occurring process in the body that creates free radicals that can damage your cells. Compounds in berries may also help keep cancers from growing or spreading. So, as part of your anti-cancer diet, pick up a handful of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, or any other favorite berries today.

Tomatoes

tomatoes

Some research has found that eating tomatoes may help protect men from prostate cancer. The juicy red orbs can help guard the DNA in your cells from damage that can lead to cancer. Tomatoes contain a particularly high concentration of an effective antioxidant called lycopene. Your body may absorb lycopene better from processed tomato foods such as sauce, which means that whole-wheat pasta with marinara sauce could be a delicious way to help lower your risk of this disease.

Cruciferous Vegetables

vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables the group containing broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower may be particularly helpful in protecting you from cancer. Researchers have found that components in these veggies can protect you from the free radicals that can damage your cells’ DNA. They may also shield you from cancer-causing chemicals, help slow the growth of tumors, and encourage cancer cells to die. They’re a tasty and healthy addition to your anti-cancer diet.

Green Tea

 green tea

Tea contains antioxidants called catechins, which may help prevent cancer in a variety of ways, including keeping free radicals from damaging cells. Lab studies have found that catechins in tea can shrink tumors and reduce tumor cell growth. Some “but not all ” studies in humans have also linked drinking tea to a lower risk of cancer. Both green and black teas contain catechins, but youll get more antioxidants from green tea, so you may want to consider a cup or more in your anti-cancer diet.

Whole Grains
whole grainWhole grains contain many components that might lower your risk of cancer, including fiber and antioxidants. A large study including nearly half a million people found that eating more whole grains might lower the risk of colorectal cancer, making them a top item in the category of foods to fight cancer. Oatmeal, barley, brown rice, and whole-wheat bread and pasta are all examples of whole grains.

Foods That Combat Fat

November 15, 2009

Your allies in battling bulge?

These edibles have proven

lipid-melting powers that help you slim.

 almonds

Almonds

Almond joy!

Dieters who ate 3 ounces of these nuts every day reduced their weight and body-mass index by a solid 18 percent compared with an 11 percent drop in the no-nut group. Almonds are high in alpha-linolenic acid, which can speed the metabolism of fats. Stick to 12 per serving.

berries

 Berries

Vitamin C“loaded fruit such as strawberries and raspberries can help you sizzle up to 30 percent more fat during exercise. Blend a vinaigrette of 1 cup berries and ¼ cup balsamic vinegar

cinnamon

Cinnamon

This spice could make your waistline nice. Sprinkling ¼ teaspoon on your food may prevent a post-meal insulin spike. This increase normally occurs after you eat and signals the body that it should store fat rather than burn it. Add a dash to your oatmeal, yogurt or coffee.

mustard

Mustard

Hello, yellow. The spice that gives mustard its color, turmeric, may slow the growth of fat tissues. Eighty-six mayo in favor of any mustard; sprinkle turmeric on cauliflower and roast for a tangy side.

orange

Oranges

Prevent pound creep with this citrus star: It contains fat-torching compounds called flavones. Women who ate the most flavones had a significantly lower increase in body fat over a 14-year period. Snack on slices or drink freshly squeezed OJ (with pulp!) for the biggest payback.

soybeans

Soybeans

These green gems are rich in choline, a compound that blocks fat absorption and breaks down fatty deposits. Add ½ cup edamame to a salad.

sweet potato

Sweet Potatoes

Trade up to sweet taters. Theyre high in fiber, which means no drastic insulin jumps and thus less fat packed onto your hips. Bake a small sweet potato “think of two bars of soap as a portion size” and top with a dollop of low-fat or nonfat cottage cheese.

swiss cheese

Swiss cheese

Holy cow: Calcium-rich foods reduce fat-producing enzymes and increase fat breakdown, says Michael B. Zemel, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Put toe to toe with some of its cheesy counterparts, Swiss is a heavy hitter in the calcium department; layer a slice on a lunchtime sandwich or stack some on high-fiber crackers.
